Szydłowiec
Poland, Poland
Szydłowiec is a town in central Poland's Masovian Voivodeship, about 30 km southwest of Radom and 100 km south of Warsaw, rooted in a 12th-century gród stronghold on an island in the Korzeniówka River marshes owned by the Odrowąż noble family, evolving into a market settlement by the 14th century under Polish law before King Casimir the Great shifted it to German Środa rights.
Granted Magdeburg town rights in 1470 by Casimir IV Jagiellon, it flourished under the Szydłowiecki family with a Gothic castle built 1470-1480, becoming a hub for iron trade, sandstone quarrying, and crafts amid five annual fairs, later passing to the Radziwiłłs who enhanced its Renaissance architecture including the castle, town hall, and churches.
Annexed by Austria in 1795, briefly part of the Duchy of Warsaw, then under Russian rule with a notable 1863 January Uprising battle, it regained Polish sovereignty in 1918 and preserves its historic market square, castle ruins, and monumental buildings as a testament to its medieval and Renaissance prominence.
