Tallinn Old Town
Tallinn, Harju County, Estonia
Tallinn Old Town is the historic heart of Estonia’s capital city, Tallinn, located in Harju County. It is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Old Town dates back to the 13th century, beginning with the construction of a castle by the Teutonic Order. Over the centuries, Tallinn developed into an important trading city within the Hanseatic League, which brought wealth and beautiful buildings to the area.
The Old Town is divided into two main parts: the upper town, called Toompea, and the lower town. Toompea sits on a limestone hill and has been the administrative center for centuries, housing the castle and cathedral. The lower town is filled with winding streets, old merchant houses, churches, guild halls, and the Town Hall Square. Much of the original street layout and many of the buildings from the 13th–16th centuries remain today.
Tallinn Old Town is surrounded by parts of its original defensive stone walls and towers. These medieval fortifications give the town a fairytale appearance, with famous towers like Tall Hermann standing out against the skyline. Walking through the Old Town, you find Gothic churches, colorful houses with high-gabled roofs, cozy courtyards, and lively market squares.
The area has survived wars, fires, and bombing, including significant damage during World War II, but much of its historic character remains. Restoration and conservation efforts have helped keep the Old Town vibrant and authentic, with the streets still used for shops, homes, and cultural events.
