Tanbi Wetland Complex

Near Banjul, Gambia

---

The Tanbi Wetland Complex, located near Banjul at the mouth of the Gambia River, is one of The Gambia’s most important protected natural areas. Established in 2001 and later designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, it consists mainly of mangrove forests, tidal creeks, mudflats, lagoons, and salt marshes that help protect the coastline and support local livelihoods. The wetland is a biodiversity hotspot, providing habitat for more than 360 bird species as well as crocodiles, otters, monkeys, shrimp, and the endangered West African manatee. It is also recognized as an Important Bird Area and a Key Biodiversity Area because of its importance to migratory and resident wildlife. Despite being close to the country’s largest urban areas, Tanbi Wetland Complex remains a vital ecological sanctuary. Its rich wildlife, extensive mangrove ecosystems, and role in flood control and fisheries make it one of the most valuable conservation areas in The Gambia.
