Verified THE AGRI HORTICULTURE SOCIETY OF INDIA'

Kolkata, West Bengal, India

The Agri-Horticultural Society of India (AHSI), founded in 1820 by Reverend Dr. William Carey on Alipore Road, Kolkata, is India’s oldest institution of its kind, established to promote and develop agriculture and horticulture across the country.

Located at 1 Alipore Road, Alipore (opposite Command Hospital), the Society operates a beautifully maintained 24-acre garden that includes flower gardens, greenhouses, a pond, a research laboratory, and a library housing extensive botanical resources. It houses a massive collection of plants and flowers, with a particularly distinguished tradition of cultivating Cannas, thanks to work begun in 1894 by Secretary Percy Lancaster and continued by his son Sydney Percy-Lancaster until the 1960s.

The garden is one of Kolkata’s best-maintained green spaces, offering serene lawns, exotic blooms, rare plant varieties, and eco-friendly gardening materials for visitors and gardeners. AHSI actively promotes research, provides training courses in gardening, garden design, and plant propagation, and organizes an annual flower exhibition every February showcasing diverse blooms.
