The Forbidden Corner
England, United Kingdom
The Forbidden Corner is a whimsical folly garden in Tupgill Park, Coverdale, within England's Yorkshire Dales National Park near Middleham.
Created in the late 1980s by estate owner Colin Armstrong and architect Malcolm Tempest as a private pleasure garden starting from a simple viewing tower and grotto, it expanded into a surreal labyrinth of interlinked tunnels, chambers, towers, pyramids, and surprises like trick fountains, hidden passages, and mythical sculptures amid four acres of walled gardens.
Opened to the public in 1994 after growing popularity, it faced closure threats over planning issues but was saved by visitor campaigns, now drawing families for its playful, maze-like exploration voted among Europe's top follies.
