Verified The Kampong, National Tropical Botanical Garden

Miami, United States

The Kampong, located in Miami's Coconut Grove neighborhood, is a 9-acre botanical garden that was once the winter home of renowned plant explorer David Fairchild. Established in 1916, Fairchild used the garden to cultivate many of the exotic tropical plants he introduced to the United States, including avocados, mangoes, and Japanese cherry blossom trees.

The garden features a wide variety of tropical fruit trees, palms, and other ethnobotanical plants from around the world. After Fairchild's death, Catherine Hauberg Sweeney purchased and preserved the property, eventually donating it in 1984 to become part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden.

Today, The Kampong serves as a living laboratory for plant research, public education, and cultural programs, showcasing its rich history and tropical biodiversity along Biscayne Bay. Visitors can explore the garden’s lush paths, diverse plant collections, and the historic Fairchild-Sweeney House, which has hosted notable figures over the years.
