The Watershed Institute, established in 1949 as the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring water quality and natural environments in central New Jersey.

It originated from community leaders concerned about agricultural runoff, soil erosion, and stream sedimentation, making it the first environmental group in the region. Over the decades, the institute has expanded its efforts to include conservation, advocacy, scientific research, and education.

It manages a 950-acre nature reserve in Hopewell Township, featuring forests, wetlands, meadows, and over ten miles of hiking trails, along with facilities such as the Watershed Center for Environmental Advocacy, Science, and Education and the seasonal Kate Gorrie Butterfly House.

The institute also runs programs for waterway pollution testing, habitat restoration, and community outreach including school programs to teach about stream monitoring and conservation. Supported by members, volunteers, and donors, it is one of the largest and most respected watershed associations in the country, continuing to grow its impact on environmental protection and sustainability in New Jersey.
