Thuisbrunn Castle

Gräfenberg, Germany, Germany

---

Thuisbrunn Castle is a medieval hill castle ruin located in the village of Thuisbrunn, part of Gräfenberg in Bavaria’s Franconian Switzerland region.

First mentioned in 1348, the castle stood on a rocky spur overlooking the surrounding countryside and served as an important local stronghold. Throughout its history, the castle was repeatedly damaged and rebuilt during regional conflicts, including the South German War of the Cities, the Bavarian War, the Second Margrave War, and the Thirty Years’ War.

Over time, much of the fortress fell into ruin, with only key structures such as the bergfried (main tower) and administrative buildings surviving. Today, Thuisbrunn Castle remains a privately owned historic ruin and is an important landmark of the village. Its surviving walls and tower reflect centuries of Franconian history and add to the scenic character of the surrounding landscape.
