Thuya Garden
Mount Desert, Maine, United States
Thuya Garden in Mount Desert, Maine, is a semi-formal herbaceous garden opened to the public in 1962, located on the grounds of Thuya Lodge, built between 1912 and 1916 by Boston landscape architect Joseph Henry Curtis.
The garden was conceived by Charles K. Savage in 1933 and developed from 1956 to 1961, partly using plants salvaged from Beatrix Farrand's Reef Point Garden after it was dismantled in 1956. Funded in part by John D. Rockefeller Jr., Thuya Garden follows an English Arts and Crafts style, featuring a central lawn axis with cross-axes bordered by flower beds containing a mix of perennials and annuals, including rhododendrons and mountain laurels.
The garden adjoins the Asticou Azalea Garden via a woodland trail, and its design reflects dedication to preserving natural beauty and horticultural legacy. Rich in historical significance, the garden remains a tranquil retreat showcasing carefully maintained plantings and rustic architectural elements.
