Toppler Castle, known locally as Topplerschlösschen, is a small and unusually designed late medieval castle located in the Tauber Valley near Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria. It was built in 1388 by Heinrich Toppler, the influential mayor of Rothenburg, as a fortified summer residence and to help protect the surrounding area. The castle is famous for its distinctive appearance: a timber-framed house sits atop a tall stone tower that was originally surrounded by a moat and accessed by a drawbridge. This rare architectural style has survived almost completely intact, making it one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in Germany. Today, Toppler Castle is a popular historic attraction and an iconic landmark of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Furnished with period furniture from the 16th to the 19th centuries, it offers visitors a glimpse into medieval and early modern life while showcasing the town’s rich heritage.
