Verified Torun Zoobotanical Garden

Toruń, Poland, Poland

The Toruń Zoobotanical Garden (Ogród Zoobotaniczny w Toruniu) is Poland's smallest zoological and botanical institution, located at ul. Bydgoska 7 in the Bydgoskie Przedmieście district of Toruń, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland, several hundred meters west of the Old Town.

The botanical garden was established in 1797 by Johann Gottiel Schulz, who purchased the land and transformed his property into a modern romantic-styled botanical garden over 30 years by planting interesting tree specimens from various parts of Europe, making it one of the oldest botanical gardens in Poland; after Schulz's death in 1827, the garden was donated to the Royal High School of Toruń for educational purposes.

In 1965, the botanical garden was merged with a newly opened zoo, and the first animals were brought there that year, creating the unique zoobotanical garden that exists today. The garden currently covers an area of 3.81 hectares (about 8 hectares according to some sources) with varied morphology and one pond, featuring 55 species of trees, 24 species of shrubs, and around 50–100 species of animals, many of which are threatened with extinction, including takins mishmi, Balinese starlings, and boa from Madagascar.
