Trakų Pusiasalio Pilis
Trakai, Trakai District Municipality, Lithuania, Lithuania
Trakų Pusiasalio Pilis, also known as Trakai Peninsula Castle, is a historic 14th century fortress in Trakai, Lithuania, built by Duke Kęstutis on a peninsula between Lake Galvė and Lake Luka. It played an important role in defending Trakai and Vilnius from attacks by the Teutonic Knights and was once one of the largest and most significant castles in Lithuania. After losing its military importance in the 15th century, it served as a residence, prison, and later became part of a Dominican monastery complex. Although much of the castle was destroyed in the 17th century, its remaining towers, walls, and restored structures are preserved today as part of the Trakai Historical National Park and attract visitors interested in Lithuania’s medieval history and architecture.
