Trausnitz Castle

Landshut, Germany, Germany

---

Trausnitz Castle is one of Bavaria’s most important medieval castles, standing on a hill above the city of Landshut.

Founded in 1204 by Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria at the same time as the city itself, it became the ancestral seat of the Wittelsbach dynasty and served as the residence and government center of the Dukes of Lower Bavaria for more than 250 years. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded from a fortified medieval stronghold into a prestigious ducal residence.

It played a major role in Bavarian political and cultural life, hosting rulers, artists, musicians, and famous medieval poets. During the Renaissance, the castle gained elaborate decorations and artistic features, adding to its architectural significance. Today, Trausnitz Castle is a major historic attraction, known for its impressive halls, courtyards, museums, and panoramic views over Landshut and the Isar Valley.
