Tudor Place
District of Columbia, USA, United States
Tudor Place in Washington, D.C., is a well-preserved Federal-style mansion built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, originally owned by Thomas Peter and his wife Martha Parke Custis Peter, the granddaughter of Martha Washington.
The estate spans about five and a half acres and is located on Georgetown Heights, offering commanding views of the Potomac River. Designed by Dr. William Thornton, who also designed the U.S. Capitol, the house features a distinguished five-part structure with two-story wings connected by hyphens and notable for its domed marble-floored Temple Portico.
Tudor Place served as the home for six generations of the Peter family, preserving a rich collection of over 18,000 decorative objects, including many belonging to the Washington family, making it the largest public collection related to the first presidential family outside of Mount Vernon. The estate also acknowledges its historical ties to slavery, as many enslaved workers and domestic servants lived and worked there.
