The UC Santa Cruz Arboretum and Botanic Garden officially began in 1964 alongside the establishment of the UCSC campus under founding Chancellor Dean E. McHenry, with the goal of preserving and showcasing California’s diverse native flora as well as plants from Mediterranean climates worldwide.

It started with the development of a living museum growing rare and unique plants across a 135-acre site characterized by varied microclimates, soil types, and topography. The arboretum features world-class collections including California native species as well as South African plants like the striking King Protea.

It emphasizes botanical conservation, research, and education, and enjoys active involvement from dedicated staff, students, and volunteers. Over the decades, the arboretum has become a hub for scientific study and public engagement, contributing to a national mission of plant biodiversity preservation and fostering appreciation for the Central Coast’s natural heritage.
