UCF Arboretum
University, Florida, United States
The UCF Arboretum at the University of Central Florida in Orlando was established in 1983, initially covering about 12 acres of disturbed pond pine habitat.
Over time, it expanded to roughly 83 acres, preserving diverse native ecosystems such as sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, oak hammock, and cypress dome. It contains over 600 plant species, including more than 100 bromeliads, and habitats supporting native wildlife like the gopher tortoise, a keystone species. The arboretum features winding trails, lakes, and conservation areas aimed at education, research, and public enjoyment.
It has evolved through active restoration efforts, including controlled burns to maintain healthy ecosystems, and hosts a community organic garden, a bonsai collection, and a propagation house. The UCF Arboretum serves as a valuable natural sanctuary on campus that fosters awareness of Florida's unique flora and supports ecological stewardship.
