Uganda National Mosque
Kampala, Central Uganda, Uganda
The Uganda National Mosque is a large and impressive mosque located on Kampala Hill in the center of Kampala, Uganda. Completed in 2006 and officially opened in 2007, it was originally named the Gaddafi National Mosque after the former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who funded its construction as a gift to Uganda's Muslim community. After Gaddafi’s death, the mosque was renamed Uganda National Mosque in 2013.
The mosque is one of the biggest in Africa and is the largest in East Africa, with the main prayer hall able to hold up to 15,000 worshippers, plus more space on the gallery and terrace for several thousand additional people. Standing on one of Kampala’s highest hills, the mosque is well known for its striking design, featuring a large dome, tall minaret, and an elegant blend of African, Arabic, and modern architectural styles.
The mosque’s minaret offers panoramic views of Kampala for those who climb the spiral stairs. Besides being a central place of worship, the mosque also serves as the headquarters of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council and houses facilities such as offices, a conference hall, a library, and a university college.
It is a significant religious and cultural landmark for both locals and visitors, welcoming people who come to admire its architecture or learn about the role of Islam in Uganda.
