Untere Burg, also known as Burg Alt-Schellenberg or the “Lower Castle,” is a medieval castle ruin located in the municipality of Schellenberg in northern Liechtenstein. Built around 1250 and first mentioned in historical records in 1317, it is the smaller of Schellenberg’s two castle ruins and was expanded during the 14th century. The castle remained inhabited until about the 16th century before being abandoned and gradually falling into ruin. Today, it is one of Liechtenstein’s five historic castles and one of the country’s three castle ruins. Situated on the edge of a forest, the site is freely accessible to visitors via local walking and cycling paths. Its preserved walls and peaceful setting provide a glimpse into Liechtenstein’s medieval past, making it a popular destination for history enthusiasts and hikers alike.
