The settlement has a long history, with records dating back to at least 1085. Historically, it was known as Scheffau and later distinguished as Unterscheffach. The village is home to the historic Allerheiligen Chapel, one of the oldest churches in the area, and the site of a former moated castle, of which only traces remain today.
