Veste Coburg is one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval fortresses, dramatically situated on a hill overlooking the city of Coburg in Bavaria.

Often called the “Franconian Crown,” its origins date back to the 10th and 11th centuries, and it developed over time into a powerful fortress that was never successfully captured in battle. The fortress played an important role in German history and is especially famous for hosting Martin Luther for six months in 1530 while the Diet of Augsburg was taking place.

For centuries, it was associated with the House of Wettin and the dukes of Saxe-Coburg, whose family connections later extended across many European royal houses. Today, Veste Coburg is both a major historical monument and a museum. Visitors can explore its impressive fortifications, courtyards, and art collections, which include works by renowned artists such as Dürer and Cranach, while enjoying panoramic views of Coburg and the surrounding countryside.
