Veste Oberhaus
Passau, Germany, Germany
Veste Oberhaus is a massive hilltop fortress overlooking Passau at the meeting point of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers.
Founded in 1219 by Prince-Bishop Ulrich II, it served for centuries as both the stronghold and residence of the Prince-Bishops of Passau and was continually expanded to meet changing military and political needs. Over its long history, the fortress successfully resisted several sieges and evolved from a medieval castle into a powerful Renaissance and Baroque fortification.
Its extensive walls, towers, and defensive structures make it one of the largest and best-preserved castle complexes in Europe. Today, Veste Oberhaus is one of Passau’s most popular landmarks. It houses the Oberhaus Museum, a youth hostel, and visitor facilities, while its observation points offer spectacular views of the old town and the famous confluence of the city’s three rivers.
