Verified Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

Miami, Florida, United States

The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami, Florida, was built between 1914 and 1922 as the winter estate of James Deering, an industrialist of the Deering McCormick-International Harvester fortune.

Located on Biscayne Bay in the Coconut Grove neighborhood, the estate showcases Italian Renaissance architecture and gardens designed by landscape architect Diego Suarez, blending European styles with Florida’s subtropical environment.

The property originally covered 180 acres but now includes a main house with 34 decorated rooms filled with European antiques and art, along with 10 acres of formal gardens featuring geometric hedge patterns, classical statues, fountains imported from Italy, and tropical plants like palms and orchids.

After suffering damage from hurricanes and high maintenance costs, much of the estate was sold off, but 50 acres including the main house, gardens, and outbuildings were acquired by Miami-Dade County and opened as a public museum in 1953. Vizcaya remains a National Historic Landmark, offering visitors a serene cultural experience combining history, art, horticulture, and coastal scenery, with ongoing conservation and restoration efforts supported by various grants and community partnerships.
