Wałcz is a town in northwestern Poland's West Pomeranian Voivodeship, in Wałcz County along the Wałcz Lake District amid numerous glacial lakes and forests, historically marking the boundary between Pomerania and Greater Poland.
A Pomeranian stronghold in early medieval times conquered by Bolesław III Wrymouth in the 12th century, it was seized by Brandenburg in 1296 before Polish King Casimir the Great reclaimed the Wałcz Land in 1368, granting town rights in 1303 as a royal city on the vital salt trade route from Kołobrzeg.
Frequently burned by Teutonic Knights in 1409 and 1460, it rebuilt under Jagiellonian kings with Polish, Scottish, and Jewish settlers, endured Swedish Deluge fires, and shifted to Prussian rule post-1772 partitions until returning to Poland after 1945, now hosting an ancient high school and army garrison.
