Wasserschloss Kunreuth

Kunreuth, Germany, Germany

Wasserschloss Kunreuth, also known as Schloss Kunreuth, is a historic moated castle located in the village of Kunreuth in Upper Franconia, Bavaria.

The castle was first documented in 1409 and has been owned by the noble von Egloffstein family for centuries, making it one of the region’s most significant aristocratic residences. The castle was repeatedly affected by conflicts, including destruction during the German Peasants’ War in 1525 and further damage during the Second Margrave War in 1553.

Each time it was rebuilt, gradually evolving from a medieval fortress into a more comfortable noble residence while retaining many of its defensive features. Originally surrounded by extensive moats and fortifications, the castle remains one of the few water castles in Franconian Switzerland. Its historic wings, towers, gatehouse, and long connection to the von Egloffstein family make it an important landmark of the region’s cultural and architectural heritage.
