Wellfield Botanic Gardens in Elkhart, Indiana, spans 36 acres, half of which are water, and sits on a historic well field that has supplied drinking water and hydropower to the city since the mid-1800s.
Conceived by the Elkhart Rotary Club in 2002 to celebrate Rotary International’s 100th anniversary, it was inspired by notable gardens like Frederik Meijer Gardens. The gardens feature over 20 themed areas including an English Cottage Garden, a Japanese Island Garden designed by Sadafumi Uchiyama, a Children’s Garden with interactive play features, and a Quilt Garden that changes annually.
Wellfield seamlessly integrates art with nature through sculptures and installations and hosts the popular summer event, Taste of the Gardens, which combines local food, art, and live music. Open year-round, the gardens offer a dynamic experience with seasonal blooms, family-friendly events, and educational programs, making it a cherished community space supporting conservation, culture, and recreation.
