Werbőczy vár -Döbrököz
Döbrököz, Hungary, Hungary
Werbőczy Castle is a historic castle ruin in the village of Döbrököz in southwestern Hungary.
Built on a hill rising above the former floodplain of the Kapos River, the site was originally an earthwork fort that was later rebuilt in stone, likely during the Middle Ages. Its existence is documented as early as 1309, and it served as an important defensive stronghold for centuries. The castle takes its name from the influential Werbőczy family, who acquired it in the 16th century.
During the Ottoman-Hungarian conflicts, it functioned as a frontier fortress and became a significant military center in the region. In 1544, however, Ottoman forces captured the castle, and it remained under Ottoman control until the late 17th century. After the Ottomans were expelled, the fortress was already in poor condition and was never fully restored.
Over time, many of its stones were removed for other building projects, leaving only fragments of brick walls and earthworks. Today, the ruins offer a glimpse into Hungary’s medieval and Ottoman-era history. Visitors can explore the remaining walls and enjoy views of Döbrököz, the Kapos River valley, and the surrounding countryside.
