Wertheim Castle
Wertheim am Main, Germany, Germany
Wertheim Castle is a striking medieval hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Wertheim am Main at the meeting point of the Main and Tauber rivers.
Construction began in the 12th century under the Counts of Wertheim, and the castle grew into one of the largest and most important fortifications in the region. The castle served as both a defensive stronghold and a cultural center during the Middle Ages. It is associated with the famous medieval poet Wolfram von Eschenbach and remained an important seat of power until parts of it were damaged and eventually ruined during the Thirty Years' War.
Today, Wertheim Castle is one of the oldest and most impressive castle ruins in Baden-Württemberg. Visitors can explore its surviving towers, walls, and historic buildings while enjoying panoramic views over the town and surrounding river valleys, making it one of Wertheim’s most popular landmarks.
