Wildenberg Castle, also known as Burg Wildenberg, is an impressive medieval castle ruin located near Kirchzell in Bavaria’s Odenwald region. Built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries by the Lords of Dürn, who were closely connected to the Hohenstaufen emperors, it is considered one of the most important castle ruins from that era in southern Germany. The castle later came under the control of the Archbishopric of Mainz and served as an administrative center for the surrounding area. It was expanded during the late Middle Ages but was destroyed during the German Peasants’ War in 1525 and was never rebuilt. Today, visitors can explore its well-preserved ruins, including the gate tower, chapel remains, and ornate stonework. The site is also famous for its connection to the medieval poet Wolfram von Eschenbach, who is believed to have written parts of his epic Parzival here, adding literary significance to its historical importance.
