Verified Wilder Park Conservatory

Elmhurst, Illinois, United States

The Wilder Park Conservatory in Elmhurst, Illinois, was built in 1923 as the first capital project of the Elmhurst Park District, located in the southwest corner of Wilder Park on land that has a rich history dating back to 1868 when Seth Wadhams established the original farm called "White Birch."

The estate originally featured a home with numerous trees and a greenhouse built to help a family member overcome grief, which is still part of the current conservatory complex. Over years, ownership passed through prominent local families including the Kings and Wilders, who expanded and improved the gardens and buildings.

The conservatory itself was constructed as an addition to the original greenhouse and has undergone major restorations, including one in 2013 funded by a state grant that updated its heating, ventilation, and glass systems to modern, energy-efficient standards.

The conservatory now hosts seasonal flower shows and provides year-round public access to a wide variety of plants, carrying forward a long tradition of horticulture and community engagement in Elmhurst. It is a cherished landmark and cultural heart of the city, surrounded by formal gardens, walking paths, and historical sites such as the neighboring Wilder Mansion and a green library facility.
