Windeck Castle
Weinheim, Germany, Germany
Windeck Castle in Weinheim, Germany, is a medieval ruin built around 1100 on a small hill along the Bergstraße to protect the properties and inhabitants of Lorsch Abbey, serving as one of the region's earliest fortresses with a prominent 28-meter tower and original dungeon accessed via a "terror hole." Badly damaged during the Thirty Years' War and further destroyed in 1674 by French troops under Turenne, it was partially repaired by the Counts of Berckheim before the city of Weinheim acquired it in 1978, restoring the walls and donjon after archaeological work revealed its full ground plan. Today, the free-to-enter site features a beer garden in the courtyard, panoramic views over Weinheim and the valley, and a small fee to climb the tower, making it a popular hiking spot and event venue amid the scenic Odenwald landscape.
