Wittelsbach Castle Friedberg
Friedberg, Germany, Germany
Wittelsbach Castle Friedberg, known locally as the Wittelsbacher Schloss Friedberg, is a historic castle overlooking the town of Friedberg in Bavaria, Germany. It originated as a medieval fortress built around 1257 under Duke Ludwig II of Bavaria and was rebuilt in Renaissance style after a major fire destroyed much of the original structure in 1541. The castle gained special importance when Duchess Christina of Lorraine chose it as her widow’s residence in the late 16th century, turning Friedberg into a center of courtly life. Over the centuries, it also housed administrative offices and a museum, becoming an important landmark in the region. Today, the fully restored four-wing castle serves as a cultural and community hub. It contains the Museum in the Wittelsbacher Castle, which showcases local history, archaeology, clocks, art, and ceramics, while the castle itself hosts exhibitions, concerts, weddings, and other public events.
