Verified Wołczyn

Poland, Poland

Wołczyn is a small town in southern Poland's Opole Voivodeship, in Kluczbork County, strategically positioned on the historic trade route between Wrocław and Kraków with roots tracing to prehistoric Ślężanie tribe settlements around the second millennium BCE.

Granted town rights in January 1261 by Duke Henry III the White on Średzko law as Fürstenthal (Książęca Dolina), it covered 100 włók of land with privileges for guilds, a bathhouse, and church, thriving amid fragmented Piast duchies like Wrocław, Głogów, and Oleśnica before Czech, Hungarian, and Prussian rule.

Ravaged by Hussite incursions, epidemics, fires in 1432, 1581, 1588, 1627, and 1633, and repopulated by exiles including Polish Arians, it passed to noble Posadowski family for 300 years until Prussian annexation in 1742, later hosting gasworks by 1904 and enduring 1945 Red Army battles before rejoining Poland.
