Wolfsberg Castle near Obertrubach, Germany, was likely built around 1150 by the free knights of Wolfsberg, who descended from noble families in the region.

It changed owners several times, passing to the lords of Stein and then to the Egloffstein family, becoming part of the Bishopric of Bamberg’s holdings by the late 14th century. The castle suffered repeated destruction: first in 1388 during the South German War of the Cities, then in the Peasants' War of 1525, and again during the Thirty Years' War in the early 17th century.

It was rebuilt multiple times but gradually fell into neglect and disrepair. By the 19th century, it was sold to private owners who dismantled parts of the structure. Today, Wolfsberg Castle stands as evocative ruins overlooking the Trubach Valley, with the upper bailey open to the public as a scenic viewpoint while parts remain in private hands.

The site reflects centuries of medieval history, conflicts, and architectural evolution in Bavaria’s Franconian Switzerland region.
