Wülzburg is a well-preserved Renaissance fortress located on a hill above Weißenburg in Bayern, Bavaria. Originally founded as a Benedictine monastery in the 11th century, it was transformed into a large pentagonal fortress between 1588 and the early 1600s by the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach, making it one of Germany’s most important examples of Renaissance military architecture. The fortress has served many roles throughout its history, including a military garrison, prison, and refugee camp. Notably, future French president Charles de Gaulle was held there as a prisoner during World War I. Today, Wülzburg is a major historical landmark and visitor attraction. Its impressive walls, bastions, courtyards, and exceptionally deep well offer insight into centuries of military and regional history, while its elevated position provides sweeping views of the Franconian countryside.
