Yangambi Biosphere Reserve

Tshopo Province, DR Congo

---

Yangambi Biosphere Reserve, located in Tshopo Province west of Kisangani, is one of the most important protected rainforest areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Established as a biosphere reserve under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme in 1976, it lies within the vast Congo Basin and covers more than 2,300 square kilometers of tropical forests, wetlands, and riverine ecosystems. The reserve is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, including rare tree species, chimpanzees, monkeys, and many other plants and animals typical of the Congo rainforest.

It is also an important center for scientific research on forests, climate change, and biodiversity, helping scientists better understand one of the world's largest tropical forest ecosystems. By combining conservation, research, and sustainable community activities, Yangambi Biosphere Reserve plays a vital role in protecting the natural heritage of the Congo Basin.
