Yburg Castle
Baden-Baden, Germany, Germany
Yburg Castle in Baden-Baden, Germany, is a medieval hilltop ruin crowning the 539-meter Yberg peak on the Black Forest's western edge, serving as the iconic landmark of the Rebland wine region and villages like Steinbach, Neuweier, and Varnhalt. Built around 1200 by Margrave Herman V of Baden to secure the southwest border—first documented in 1245—its west bergfried tower stands 20 meters tall amid an elliptical curtain wall, withstood Peasants' War damage in 1525, was rebuilt 1617-1620, then razed by French troops in 1689. Currently closed for renovation, the free-access site normally offers panoramic Rhine Valley and Black Forest views from the restored keep, plus a castle inn since 1892 for refreshments amid historic ramparts and folklore sculptures like dragons and griffins.
