Żagań is a historic town in western Poland's Lubuskie Voivodeship, situated in Lower Silesia along the Bóbr River, with a population of about 25,000.
Founded around 1150 by Polish Duke Bolesław IV the Curly and first documented in 1202 under Piast rule, it gained town rights by 1260 from Duke Konrad I of Głogów, prospering through mining and trade that drew German settlers.
From 1274 to 1549, it served as capital of the Piasts' Żagań Duchy, later passing to Bohemian, Habsburg, and Prussian control before rejoining Poland in 1945; key landmarks include the Gothic former Augustinian monastery (a Piast burial site and Historic Monument), Ducal Palace, and WWII POW camps museum marking the Great Escape.
