Zagórz is a small town in southeastern Poland's Subcarpathian Voivodeship, in Sanok County at the gateway to the Bieszczady Mountains, first mentioned in 1412 as a village owned by the Tarnawski noble family with a Gothic chapel possibly founded by King Casimir the Great.
In 1710, Voivode Jan Adam Stadnicki erected a fortified Carmelite monastery that doubled as a veterans' hospital and Bar Confederation rebel hideout, later closed by Emperor Joseph II in 1789 and destroyed by fire in 1830.
Railroads built in 1872 and 1884 spurred growth, boosting its population to 2,400 by 1914 and aiding defenses during the Polish-Ukrainian War, while post-WWII it sheltered locals from UPA attacks amid diverse Polish, Ukrainian, and Jewish communities.
