The Zalavár Historical Memorial Park is an important archaeological and cultural site located on Castle Island (Vársziget) near the Kis-Balaton wetlands in western Hungary. It preserves the remains of Mosaburg, a major 9th-century settlement and the easternmost center of the Frankish Empire, which later became an important religious and administrative center in Hungarian history. The park contains the ruins of ancient churches and monasteries, including the remains of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Adrian, as well as monuments dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius, who carried out missionary work in the region. It also features the modern Millennium Memorial Building designed by Imre Makovecz and exhibits highlighting the area's rich archaeological heritage. Today, the site offers visitors a unique combination of history, archaeology, nature, and spirituality. Surrounded by the scenic landscapes of the Kis-Balaton area, it provides insight into more than a thousand years of regional history and remains one of Hungary’s most significant historical memorial parks.
