Żałe is a small village in north-central Poland's Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, within Rypin County and Gmina Brzuze.
Around 1100, during the reign of Władysław Herman or Bolesław Krzywousty, a wooden-earth fort was built on a hill by Lake Kopiec, later burned by Prussian raids in the 13th century or the 1329 Teutonic invasion.
In 1252, Duke Kazimierz Kujawski took over and likely constructed a stone castle there, which fell into disuse by the late 15th century; mid-16th-century noble Żelski family (Ogończyk coat of arms) then built a defensive manor house on the site, fortified by the hill's natural defenses and nearby Ruziec river, lasting until possibly the 1655 Swedish Deluge.
Today, the oval-shaped (170x110m) former stronghold is used for agriculture, with ramparts partially leveled, and accessible via a short walk.
