Zamek w Kórniku, located in the town of Kórnik near Poznań, Poland, originated in the late 14th century as a Gothic fortress built around 1370-1430 by knight Wyszota of the Łodzia clan on a marshy island surrounded by a moat, featuring an irregular quadrilateral plan with an 8-meter-diameter cylindrical northeastern tower and a residential building. Stanisław Górka transformed it into a Renaissance residence in 1565 by enclosing the courtyard with connected wings under a mansard roof, adding northern bastions and a grand gate. In the 19th century, Tytus Działyński redesigned it into an English neo-Gothic castle inspired by Karl Friedrich Schinkel's plans, adding a tall brick tower, crenellations, loggias, turrets, bays, southern risalit with ogive arcade, and exotic Mauritanian-style interiors for his library and collections, completed by his son Jan Kanty. Now housing the Kórnik Arboretum and museum with Polish historical artifacts, it remains one of Poland's finest neo-Gothic landmarks tied to romantic nationalism.
