Verified Zamość

Poland, Poland

Zamość is a Renaissance gem in southeastern Poland's Lublin Voivodeship, founded in 1580 by Grand Chancellor Jan Zamoyski on a key trade route linking Europe to the Black Sea, designed by Italian architect Bernardo Morando as an ideal fortified city blending Venetian and Central European styles.

Its UNESCO-listed historic center preserves the original star-shaped bastion fortifications, radial street layout, town hall, and arsenal, thriving in the 16th century as a multicultural hub for Poles, Armenians, Greeks, and Sephardic Jews who settled from 1588.

Besieged by Cossacks in 1648 and Swedes in 1656 yet resilient, it later endured partitions, wars, and Nazi destruction before revival as a cultural monument with the Zamoyski Academy, Europe's third oldest post-secondary school opened in 1595.
