Verified Zator

Poland, Poland

Zator is a historic town in southern Poland's Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in Oświęcim County along the Skawa River, with roots tracing to 1228 when it was granted to a local voivode and later the Benedictine convent in Staniątki.

Incorporated into the Duchy of Cieszyn in 1281 and receiving town rights in 1292 modeled on Lwówek Śląski, it became capital of the independent Piast Duchy of Zator in 1445 under Prince Wenceslaus I, who fortified it and began a castle later rebuilt into a neo-Gothic palace by noble families like Dunin and Potocki.

Sold to King John I Albert in 1494, it joined the Polish Crown fully by 1513, thriving on trade and fish ponds before suffering Swedish wars and partitions, now known for its castle housing a fisheries research station.
