Zawichost is a small town in southeastern Poland's Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, in Sandomierz County along the Vistula River, first mentioned around 1148 as a castellan stronghold and market settlement guarding a key river crossing.
Site of the pivotal 1205 Battle of Zawichost where Princes Leszek the White and Konrad of Masovia defeated Halych's Roman the Great, it received town rights before 1255, endured Mongol raids in 1241, 1259, and 1287, and prospered under King Casimir the Great who built a defensive castle and fortified a Poor Clares convent granted by Bolesław the Chaste in 1257.
A royal town from the 14th century with medieval importance in Lesser Poland, it suffered Swedish destruction in 1657 and 1701, partitions, and near-total ruin in 1944 WWII fighting before postwar rebuilding.
