Zawidów is a small town in southwestern Poland's Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in Zgorzelec County right on the Czech border, with a population of around 4,200.
An early medieval stronghold of the Bieżuńczanie tribe incorporated into Poland by Bolesław I the Brave around 1000, it was first documented in 1186 and gained town rights in 1369 (or possibly 1255) under Bohemian rule.
Plagued by fires in 1427, 1433, 1469, 1769, and 1834, it saw Protestant Czech refugees boost crafts during the Thirty Years' War, pioneered a school for the deaf in 1698, and developed textile industry from 1848 onward before rejoining Poland after 1945.
