Zawiercie is an industrial town in southern Poland's Silesian Voivodeship, near the source of the Warta River with roots in the medieval village of Kromołów first mentioned in 1193 along a Kraków-Poznań trade route.
Named Zawiercie appears in 1431 documents granting ironworks and an inn, evolving through noble ownership until railroads arrived in 1847 sparking factories, coal mines, and a 1878 worker settlement that grew its population to 30,000 by 1914.
Granted town rights in 1915 amid socialist strikes like the 1894 Cotton Plant sit-in, it reintegrated into independent Poland in 1918 after Russian partition.
