Zborov Castle
Zborov, Bardejov District, Slovakia, Slovakia
Zborov Castle, known as Makovica, crowns a prominent hill above the village of Zborov in Slovakia's Bardejov District, built in the early 14th century as a royal Hungarian border fortress guarding trade routes through the Carpathians along the Kamenec River valley. Its Gothic core featured a walled courtyard, polygonal tower, palace, and chapel, expanded in the 15th-16th centuries by noble families like the Cudars, Rozgonyis, and Serédys with outer wards, cannon bastions, gatehouses, drawbridges, and Renaissance residences amid three defensive circuits. Though it changed hands repeatedly until the Rákoczi era, the substantial ruins—including walls, towers, cellars, and economic buildings—remain a popular hiking site with preserved access paths today.
