Żmigród is a town in southwestern Poland's Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in Trzebnica County, located along the Barycz River in the Żmigród Basin with about 6,400 residents.
Settlement traces date to the Bronze Age, with the first Slavic mention as Zunigrod in Pope Adrian IV's 1155 bull; it was founded as a town on May 15, 1253, by Duke Henry III the White under German law near a key ford.
Part of the Głogów and Oleśnica duchies under Piasts until 1492, it later passed to Czech kings, Prussian barons, and Hatzfeld owners who expanded its castle; ravaged by Swedes in 1642 and 1655, it features Gothic-Renaissance castle ruins today.
