Zwingenberg Castle
Zwingenberg, Germany, Germany
Zwingenberg Castle (also called Schloss Zwingenberg) is a well-preserved medieval fortress perched 50 meters above the right bank of the River Neckar in the municipality of Zwingenberg, Baden‑Württemberg, where the river cuts through the Odenwald hills.
It was likely built in the 13th century by William of Wimpfen, a Hohenstaufen official, with its first documented mention in 1326, and it later served as a key defensive stronghold for the region. After being damaged and partially destroyed in 14th‑century conflicts, it was rebuilt starting in 1403 under the Lords of Hirschhorn and later acquired baroque elements through renovations over the centuries.
Since 1808 the castle has remained in the private ownership of the Margraves (now Princes) of Baden and is currently inhabited by Prince Ludwig of Baden and his family. Today it is one of the most impressive fortresses in the Neckar Valley and a popular tourist attraction; visitors can take guided tours of its medieval architecture and exhibition rooms, and every summer since 1983 the castle courtyard hosts the Castle Festival, an open‑air opera best known for performances of Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz.
