The Bahamas, officially the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, is an archipelagic country at the northwestern edge of the West Indies, south-east of Florida and north of Cuba. It consists of about 700 islands and many cays, with the capital Nassau located on New Providence Island. The population is approximately 413,400 as of 2025, and English is the official language.
Most Bahamians are of African and European descent, reflecting the country’s legacy of the Atlantic slave trade. The economy is dependent on tourism, especially casino gambling, and international financial services, with most food products being imported. The Bahamas became independent from the United Kingdom in 1973 and is a constitutional monarchy, with the British monarch as the head of state, represented by a governor-general.
